Borobudur
Magelang, Central Java, Indonesia
Located in Central Java, Indonesia, the massive Buddhist Borobudur temple has stood the test of time. Over the centuries it has been through earthquakes and buried in ash from volcanic eruptions.
Borobudur is constructed of 2 milllion andesite blocks that make up six square platforms and three circular platforms. It is the largest Buddhist temple of its kind in the world.
The pathways are covered with 2,672 intricately carved panels that tell the story of Buddhist belief and history. There are 504 Buddha statues in various poses around the perimeter with another 72 enclosed in bell-shaped stupas on the top three circular platforms. Buddhists still consider Borobudur to be a sacred site and celebrate Vesak, Buddha's birthday, during the 5th full moon on the lunar calendar.
